Servers = to contain application (Web, DNS, Mail, DHCP, DB, File …etc)
all the above devices we call them Endpoints.
Hub = always make flooding to the data to be sent to all the other pc / other destinations
Switch = Smart device which has operation system, so he will creat table of MACs of the PCs
MAC Table is Combination between the MAC and the port number.
send data based on the L2 header which is the destination MAC
send data to the specific Mac based on his port number in the MAC Table.
Each Switch create LAN/Network/Subnet
Each Switch PCs must take the Same IP Range
Router = Connect between Multiple Lans/Networks/Subnets
Has Operatin System, to create Routing tables
Routing Table define which LAN/Subnet/IPRange Connted over which router interface
Router send data based on the Layer 3 header which is the destination IP.
Firewall = packet filtering
permit some traffic and deny another traffic
based on Rules (malwares based on DB, specifi denied IPs)
IPS = detect malewares based on bahaviour
VPN Gateway = create a VPN between SRC and Dst to encrypt the traffic
Network Addresseing:
each device in the network (endpoints) must has 2 addresses
1- IP address : Layer 3 address, must be given to the endpoint by the network engineer
(manually or using DHCP Server )
2- MAC Address : Layer 2 Address, coming by default with the PC Card
Basic Commands:
Router>enable = in the user mode
Router# = in the privilidge mode
Router#Show clock
Router#show run = showing the configuration file
Router#show int status = showing the interface name, UP/Down, Connected or not
Router#show ip int br = showing the interface name, UP, Status
Router#show Mac-address table = showing the MAC table inside the switch
Router#show ip route = showing routing table inside the router
Router#copy run start = to save configuration
Router#Conf t = to enter the configuration mode
Router(config)# = this is the global configuration mode
